Car & Trailer (BE)

About the licence

Between 01 January 1997 and autumn 2021, car drivers were required to take an additional driving test to attain their BE (Car & Trailer) entitlement. This was abolished in autumn 2021.

The Course

Although the requirement to take a BE test has been removed, drivers are encouraged to complete competency training for the safe use of trailers. Training is typically completed on a 1-to-1 basis over a 7 hour period, unless otherwise requested. We are able to supply the vehicle (Ford Ranger Wildtrak) and trailer for training purposes, or alternatively you may wish to provide your own. Throughout the course you will cover the following four modules:
  • Vehicle and Trailer Checks
  • Safe Uncouple & Re-couple Procedures
  • On-The-Road Driving Abilities
  • Reversing and Manoeuvring Exercises
Upon successful completion you will be awarded a certificate to confirm the attendance of basic training. At Heads of the Valleys Training we have our own private DVSA test facility on site, giving us plenty of space to practice the off-road elements and set up reverse manoeuvre exercises to practice. Courses can be adapted to suit any specific needs/requirements you may have. Please contact us for more information.

Driver CPC

If you intend on using your LGV licence professionally (i.e. use your licence for work purposes/to be paid as a driver), you will need to complete your LGV Driver CPC qualification. You can read more about Driver CPC by clicking here.
